چکیده

Background Being cardiovascular diseases the leading cause of death worldwide, a prompt intervention is needed to restore blood flow. Sonothrombolysis with/without addiction of thrombolytic drugs is explored as a promising solution, thanks to its non-invasiveness, precision and action quickness. Even if the involved mechanisms are not completely understood, acoustic cavitation seems to play a significant role [1]. Several efforts are currently devoted to optimizing sonication parameters [2]. A thorough investigation on the involved physical phenomena is expected to further speed-up the process.

Improved sonothrombolysis from a modified diagnostic transducer delivering impulses containing a longer pulse duration.

Although guided high-mechanical-index (MI) impulses from a diagnostic ultrasound transducer have been used in preclinical studies to dissolve coronary arterial and microvascular thrombi in the presence of intravenously infused microbubbles, it is possible that pulse durations (PDs) longer than that used for diagnostic imaging may further improve the effectiveness of this approach. By use of an ...

Cavitation detection for brain imaging and therapy

Background/introduction Cavitation-mediated therapies for the brain, such as ultrasound-induced Blood-Brain barrier opening and sonothrombolysis for the treatment of stroke, are being increasingly investigated. Robust methods for monitoring and controlling cavitation are necessary for safe translation of these techniques into clinical practice. This talk will review our work detecting and mappi...

Evaluating the Effects of Dual Frequency Sonication Parameters on Acoustic Cavitation by Chemical Dosimeter Using Iodide

Background and Aims: Production of acoustic cavitation by sonication has been recently recommended as a targeted treatment. The experimental results from studies indicate that the activity of cavitation generated by bi- or multi-frequency ultrasound irradiation is higher than that caused by single frequency irradiation. In this study, effects dual (1 MHz and 40 kHz) and single frequency soni...

Simulation of intracranial acoustic fields in clinical trials of sonothrombolysis.

Two clinical trials have used ultrasound to improve tPA thrombolysis in patients with acute ischemic stroke. The Combined Lysis of Thrombus in Brain Ischemia Using Transcranial Ultrasound and Systemic tPA (CLOTBUST) trial reported accelerated recanalisation of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) in patients with symptoms of MCA infarction, which were monitored with 2-MHz transcranial Doppler. In C...

In Vitro Investigation of the Individual Contributions of Ultrasound-Induced Stable and Inertial Cavitation in Targeted Drug Delivery.

Ultrasound-mediated targeted drug delivery is a therapeutic modality under development with the potential to treat cancer. Its ability to produce local hyperthermia and cell poration through cavitation non-invasively makes it a candidate to trigger drug delivery. Hyperthermia offers greater potential for control, particularly with magnetic resonance imaging temperature measurement. However, cav...
